AN ANALYSIS OF INCARCERATED BLACK WOMEN THROUGH THE LENS OF CASA GRANDE & SENZALA

Abstract

This article aims to address the worrying situation of black women in the Brazilian prison system, highlighting the profound racial and gender inequalities present in this context. Through historical analyzes and literature reviews, the text highlights how the intersectionality of oppression, combining racial and gender discrimination, contributes to the overrepresentation of black women in prisons. Furthermore, it makes a connection with the work "Casa Grande & Senzala" by Gilberto Freyre, highlighting how the concepts presented by the author about social relations in colonial Brazil still reverberate in contemporary social structures, directly impacting the lives of incarcerated black women. Through a literature review, highlighted in bibliographical references, the article examines the historical and structural roots of this phenomenon, seeking to promote a deeper understanding of social and racial issues in Brazil and highlighting the ongoing need to fight for equality.

Author Biographies

  • Sabrina Orth, Federal University of Pampa

    She has a Bachelor's degree in Law from the Faculty of Law of Santa Maria - FADISMA (2010), a Postgraduate Lato Sensu degree in Criminology, Criminal Policy, and Public Security from the Institute of Law RS/Anhanguera (2014), and a Bachelor's degree in Law from the Federal Institute Farroupilha (2021). She is currently pursuing a Master's in Public Policy at the Federal University of Pampa - UNIPAMPA (2023). She was approved in the Brazilian Bar Association exam in 2010, obtaining professional license number 81.228. She has experience in civil law, criminal law, and labor law. She is currently a Federal Public Servant, holding the position of Administrative Assistant in Education at the Federal Institute Farroupilha Campus São Borja–RS since October 2014.
