NOTES FROM MATTERS COVERED IN THE FOLHA DE SÃO BORJA (1970-1978)

Abstract

This paper aims to present the term "revolution" found in two editions of the newspaper Folha de São Borja during the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship period, which began in 1964 and lasted until 1985. In the reports from the newspaper, we seek to identify the editions that cover the celebrations of the Brazilian coup d'état that took place on March 31. Among the topics developed in this article are the political context of the period, the concepts of coup and revolution, and the constitutional acts that guided this dictatorial regime. As a methodology, the first step was to use a literature review, documentary research, specifically in the editions of the newspapers, and for its analysis, content analysis was applied. The source used for the investigation was the Folha de São Borja newspaper, published since 1970. Specifically, one article from 1970 and another from 1978 were used, giving the research a documentary character. Thus, in the years in question, it was observed that the newspaper reported the ceremonies marking the "Revolution" anniversary without opposing the celebration, merely narrating the events of the occasion. Therefore, the newspaper presented the existence of a revolution in 1964, rather than a coup d'état, as it should be stated. In other words, we emphasize that the events reported were not anniversaries of the revolution, but of a coup, which included the deposition of President João Goulart.
