Abstract

The article analyzes the use of the word "hysteria" in headlines and articles from Brazilian digital journalism. It seeks to understand how such usage, understood here as the claustro of hysteria, contributes to the symbolic imprisonment of women. The repetition of the term creates a shift in the social imagination of the image of the feminine. Six journalistic articles published between 2018 and 2022 will be analyzed, using feminist theories and discourse, focusing on the word in order to consider its historical weight in women’s experiences, in contrast to its placement in contemporary journalism headlines.

Author Biographies

  • Raabe Cesar Moreira Bastos, Federal University of Espírito Santo

    Undergraduate student in Journalism at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES); scientific initiation researcher, scholarship holder at the Espírito Santo Research and Innovation Support Foundation (FAPES) with the project "Women and Political Territory: Contradiscourses of Independent Media on Female Hysteria"; beginner researcher at the Data Kula Lab research laboratory; participates in the Study and Research Group on Sexualities (GEPSs/Ufes); monitor of the course "Communication and the Democratic State of Law: Feminisms and Citizenship"; volunteers as a writer for the website LesB Out! In her first year of scientific initiation research, she was a CNPq scholarship holder with the project "In Search of an Aesthetic of Hysteria: Female Characters in The Headless Woman and The Yellow Wallpaper"; was a monitor for two terms in the course "Anthropology and Technologies"; wrote for the Culture and Movements columns of the Brado Magazine; was a host, producer, and scriptwriter at the University Radio - Bandejão 104.7. Areas of interest: Feminisms and Communication; Lesbianities and Communication; Discourse; Contradiscourse; Political Territory; Computational Anthropology; Science and Technology Studies; Algorithmic Identities.

  • Gabriela Santos Alves, Federal University of Espírito Santo

    Associate Professor II at the Department of Social Communication and the Graduate Program in Communication and Territorialities at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), Brazil. She is a researcher at LapVim - Research Laboratory on the Fight Against Violence Against Women in Espírito Santo and a member of the research group CIA - Communication, Image, and Affect (UFES/CNPq). She completed her PhD in Communication and Culture at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - Eco/UFRJ (2010), where she also completed her Postdoctoral Internship in 2018. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Communication - Radio and TV from FAESA (2000), a Bachelor's degree in History from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (2003), a specialization in Political History from UFES, a specialization in Philosophy from UFES, and a Master's degree in Literary Studies from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (2005). She is currently completing a Postdoctoral Internship at the Graduate Program in Philosophy/UFES. Her academic and artistic areas of interest include audiovisual culture and female identities, representativity in audiovisual media, contemporary feminist theory, gender and racialities.
