Theoretical Considerations and the Need for Conceptualizing Democracy According to Giovanni Sartori

Abstract

The present article focuses on the reflection of the conceptualization of democracy in the theoretical framework developed by Giovanni Sartori. To this end, the following question is raised: how does Giovanni Sartori's theoretical concept of democracy contribute to the conceptualization of the topic? In order to address this question, this research examines theoretical conceptions of democracy and focuses on Sartori’s conceptualization of democracy, particularly in relation to the first volume of the work A Teoria da Democracia Revisitada: O Debate Contemporâneo (SARTORI, 1994), which summarizes the work of the distinguished professor.
Methodologically, this investigation is classified as exploratory, with a qualitative approach, adopting bibliographic research through three pre-structured phases: reading, note-taking, and conceptual systematization, in order to assist in addressing the issue formulated in this article using bibliographic documents (CERVO, 2007). Thus, the goal is to reflect on critical diagnoses concerning the conceptualization of democracy in contemporary times. This conceptual investigation is justified by its potential to contribute to the enhancement of studies on democratic issues in their full extent, as well as the applicability of this form of government. In this regard, democracy is one of the central themes in modern social sciences.
