In this paper, we conduct a historical analysis of the Casa de Cultura Pompílio Neves de Freitas, a heritage site listed at two levels: state level by IPHAE RS (IPHAE, 1986) and federal level by IPHAN (IPHAN, 2011), located in Jaguarão, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Its history is marked by transitions, as before becoming a cultural center, the building was originally erected in 1815 for residential purposes. Over time, in 1903, the space was transformed into Colégio Espírito Santo, and in 1915, the building became home to the Sociedade Caritativa e Literária São Francisco de Assis. By 1920, the building was acquired by the state and became the city's forum. In 1995, the building was transferred to the municipality and renamed "Casa de Cultura Pompílio Neves de Freitas," in honor of the Jaguarão-based stylist, Pompílio Neves de Freitas, who was openly homosexual and passionate about carnival. Pompílio designed costumes and clothing not only for high society but also for himself, often participating in parades and winning awards. He was involved in various samba schools and passed away in 2003 at the age of 50. In his memory, the cultural center bears his name. The building stands out not only for its eclectic architecture but also as a space for acceptance and interaction for the LGBTQIA+ community, who were often rejected elsewhere.
