Abstract

The species Morinda citrifolia L., popularly known as noni, is widely used in traditional Brazilian medicine. Despite the widespread use of plants for therapeutic purposes, many plant species can be toxic, posing a potential health risk, and there are controversial data regarding the biological effects of this species. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the toxic effect of the species M. citrifolia on Allium cepa root cells in vivo. For this evaluation, A. cepa roots were immersed in the hydroalcoholic extract of M. citrifolia (HeMc) at a concentration of 0.1 mg/L for a period of 72 hours. Toxicity was assessed by the length of the roots after exposure to HeMc. The results obtained demonstrated that HeMc was not toxic to the roots of A. cepa, not inhibiting their growth after treatment. The positive control at the concentration used (Paracetamol) showed a toxic and inhibitory effect on root growth. The species presents compounds with promising biological activities for use in food and/or therapeutics and the present study contributes to safety and validation of safe use. The importance of new studies that evaluate the safety of use with different concentrations and in other test organisms is highlighted.
