The serious negative health consequences of work addiction, which affect several professional categories, make it a public health problem. Work addiction is defined as a behavioral pattern characterized by an excessive investment of time and effort in work, along with an obsession with work. The objective of the study was to conduct an narrative review of the national literature on work addiction. The search was conducted in the Capes, Scielo, and BVS databases, using the terms ‘Work Addiction’; ‘Workaholism’ OR ‘Workaholic’; ‘Work Addiction’; ‘Train Addiction’. The search initially identified 43 articles. We excluded 28 of these because they did not meet the inclusion criteria. Consequently, we analyzed a total of 15 articles in the final review, categorizing them by year of publication, journal, sample, design, instrument used, and main results. The results showed a higher number of studies published in psychology journals in 2020, featuring cross-sectional designs and utilizing the Dutch Work Addiction Scale (DUWAS). The results revealed associations between sociodemographic, occupational, and consequential variables. We suggest new studies that focus more on diversifying designs, data collection techniques, and explanatory variables to fill the identified gaps.
