Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the cognitive function of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis over the years. This is a descriptive and analytical study, with a retrospective cohort design in the years 2018, 2019, and 2020. Sixty-one patients undergoing hemodialysis participated. The research instruments used were the physical functional record with the variables age (years), hemodialysis time (months), sex (male, female), education level (illiterate, incomplete primary education, complete primary education, complete secondary education, and higher education), and the Mini-Mental State Examination for the assessment of cognitive function (remained with cognitive deficit; began to have cognitive deficit; ceased to have cognitive deficit; and remained without cognitive deficit). Data were analyzed using Pearson's chi-square test considering p≤0.05. The results indicate that the cognitive function of hemodialysis patients changed significantly over the three years of analysis. In 2018, 59.1% had probable cognitive impairment, in 2019, 53.5%, and in 2020, this decreased to 32.5%. Furthermore, 45.0% maintained cognitive decline, 22.5% ceased to have cognitive problems, 10.0% began to experience cognitive decline, and 22.5% remained with cognitive problems. It is concluded that a large proportion of patients remained without cognitive impairment during this follow-up period (2018-2020), and these results demonstrate the importance of a multidisciplinary team being involved in the care of renal patients, considering that cognitive function is a variable that can be influenced by several factors and directly impacts the quality of life and treatment of patients.
