THE ROLE OF INDIGENOUS WOMEN IN THE XAVANTE SOCIAL AND TRADITIONAL STRUCTURE

Abstract

In Xavante societies, women are not only seen as transmitters of knowledge and keepers of culture, but also as active agents of change and resistance. Their contributions are fundamental to preserving the memory, identity, and autonomy of Xavante communities amid ongoing changes and challenges. This study aims to analyze the preservation of tradition, the connection between the transcendent and ancestry, and the recovery of customary knowledge of the Xavante people through the lived experiences of Indigenous women, based on a literature review about the Xavante, including anthropological studies to understand their cultural practices and gender dynamics. The objective is to value their contributions in strengthening their communities, enriching society as a whole, promoting cultural diversity, and preserving traditional ways of life. Preliminary results reveal that Xavante women play key roles in various spheres of community life, including agriculture, transmission of traditional knowledge, and education.

Dandara Christine Alves de Amorim, University Center of Vale do Araguaia

Doctoral candidate in Law at the University of the West of Santa Catarina (UNOESC). Holds a Master’s degree in Territorial Development and Planning from the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás (PUC-GO) and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Cultural Studies, Memory and Heritage at the State University of Goiás (UEG). Serves as coordinator and professor of the Bachelor’s Degree in Law at the University Center of Vale do Araguaia (Univar).

Keley Cristina Carneiro, State University of Goiás

Faculty member at the State University of Goiás, teaching in the History undergraduate program and in the Master’s Program in Cultural Studies, Memory and Heritage (PROMEP/UEG/Cora Coralina Campus). Holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in History from the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), a specialization in Modern and Contemporary History from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC/Minas), and a PhD in Public Policies, Strategy and Development from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
