Abstract

The increase in the elderly population raises the number of hospital admissions, with multiple factors rendering older individuals more vulnerable and exhibiting higher mortality during hospitalization. The global SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the fragility of the elderly population. Advances in technology for severe patient care have improved survival rates for those requiring intensive support, although comorbidities resulting from the stressful experience may arise. Objective: To evaluate the functional status of elderly individuals affected by COVID-19 after hospital discharge. Methodology: This study is descriptive and cross-sectional, conducted through cognitive and psychological assessments, anthropometric data, functional performance tests, and quality of life perception evaluations. Results: There were no differences in functional, cognitive, psychological tests, or quality of life concerning disease severity in men and women, except for Body Mass Index (BMI), where ICU survivors had higher values. The length of hospitalization was significantly longer for ICU survivors. When comparing by age, there was a significant difference in BMI and hospitalization duration, with worse results in younger elderly individuals. Conclusion: No differences were observed regarding variables two years after acute illness; patients with more severe disease exhibited similar activities to those who survived milder illness.
