Abstract

This study evaluates the sustainability of COOPERTAN, a cooperative of solid waste pickers in Tangará da Serra, Brazil, by applying an indicator matrix based on the model of Besen et al. (2017). The research uses a mixed approach, combining documentary research, on-site observation and structured questionnaires, totaling 21 indicators distributed in five dimensions: institutional, socioeconomic, organizational, operational and working conditions. The results indicate a general sustainability index of 0.63, classified as favorable, with strong institutional and socioeconomic bases, but challenges in operational efficiency and working conditions. The study reinforces the importance of structured indicators and strategic partnerships to improve the management of COOPERTAN and similar cooperatives, offering a practical tool for monitoring and improving sustainability in the solid waste sector.
