WHO WILL CARE FOR US? UNDERSTANDINGS OF ADULT AND OLDER ADULTS IN BRASÍLIA ABOUT LONG-TERM CARE

Abstract

Population aging has significantly increased the challenges related to the organization of long-term care in Brazil, especially given the rapid demographic transition and limitations in the provision of these services. This study aimed to understand the expectations of long-term care among adults and elderly people, considering how they intend to be cared for in situations of dependency, both formally and informally. It also sought to analyze the relationship between these expectations and family support, sociodemographic characteristics, and satisfaction with aging. This is a cross-sectional, exploratory study with a quantitative approach, involving 436 participants recruited in person and through digital platforms. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicate a preference for home care, associated with the valuing of autonomy, family life, and satisfaction with aging. Greater acceptance of formal care was observed among individuals with poorer health perception, lower satisfaction, and lack of support for daily activities. Although family care remains central, the perception of insufficiency in the country's care network predominates. It can be concluded that there is a gap between individual expectations and the state's capacity to respond, reinforcing the need for planning and strengthening public policies.
