RESCUING AND VALUING THE HISTORY OF SÃO VICENTE DO SUL

Abstract

This article addresses the critical importance of preserving the history of São Vicente do Sul, especially as its 150th anniversary approaches. The city's history is at risk of being lost due to a lack of records and the absence of a proper structure for their safekeeping. To reverse this situation, creating a municipal archive is crucial. This space would not only organize and preserve historical documents, photos, and other materials but also serve as a foundation for research and publications. Neglecting these records compromises the collective memory and sense of community identity. Beyond the material aspect, it is essential to develop heritage education. Raising awareness among the population, starting in schools, about the value of their cultural heritage fosters a sense of belonging and responsibility. This care for local history is the first step toward ensuring its long-term preservation. Finally, the article proposes an ambitious project to celebrate the city's sesquicentennial: the creation of a museum or a memory room. This initial space would be the starting point for a larger project, offering the community and researchers a place to connect with the past. Building a museum is not just about rescuing objects; it's about building a future where the history of São Vicente do Sul is valued and accessible to everyone. The article also suggests publishing a book about São Vicente do Sul to be used in all city schools.
