Abstract

This article offers a critical reflection on the concept of Agrarian Heritage through the lens of decolonial thought. It recognizes that, although agrarian activity is a universal human practice, it takes on different forms and meanings depending on historical, cultural, and territorial contexts. The study aims to examine how a decolonial approach can contribute to reconstructing and redefining the concept of Agrarian Heritage in Brazil, by embracing epistemological diversity and acknowledging the plurality of relationships with the land found in Indigenous, Quilombola, peasant, caboclo, and other traditional communities. The research adopts a qualitative methodology with a theoretical-interpretative approach, grounded in the dialectical method. Findings show that the traditional concept of Agrarian Heritage, shaped by Eurocentric and technical categories, fails to capture the territorial meanings expressed by these communities. Rather than rejecting European foundations, this study advocates for recognizing and respecting them, while reconstructing the concept based on local and plural epistemologies. This epistemological shift is essential to ensure that Agrarian Heritage truly reflects the plural and complex realities of the Brazilian territory.
