Abstract

This study aimed to investigate users’ perceptions and experiences regarding clothing as a tool for health promotion, considering aspects of quality of life, well-being, and autonomy. Although the literature emphasizes the relationship between fashion, comfort, and ergonomics, little attention has been given to clothing as an instrument for health promotion. To address this gap, a specific questionnaire was developed, statistically and expert validated, and administered online to 253 participants. An exploratory mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining content analysis with statistical tests (Chi-Square and Fisher’s Exact Test). The findings reveal that clothing plays a significant role in shaping identities, fostering autonomy, and supporting both physical and mental health. The study also identified challenges such as discomfort from inappropriate garments, the lack of products designed for people with disabilities, mobility loss, or aging, and insufficient user information on disposal practices. Inclusive and technology-driven products were recognized as capable of enhancing quality of life. The main limitations concern the non-probabilistic sampling and self-reported data. Overall, this research expands the understanding of the intersections between clothing design and health, providing insights for interdisciplinary approaches aimed at promoting autonomy, well-being, and quality of life.
