Abstract

This article investigates the relationship between urban sustainability and city responses to the climate emergency. It examines the challenges and opportunities related to climate change adaptation and mitigation in urban environments, taking into account social, economic, and environmental dimensions. In light of the escalating global climate crisis, how can the various meanings of sustainability be applied to cities to make them more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable? The general objective is to analyze the different interpretations of sustainability within the urban context, particularly in addressing the climate emergency, emphasizing the role of the right to the city and climate governance in fostering more resilient and sustainable urban spaces. As a specific objective, the study explores the evolution of the concept of urban sustainability and its application in city planning. It also discusses the intersection between the right to the city and sustainability, and—within the framework of climate governance—evaluates public policies and urban strategies aimed at climate change mitigation and adaptation, highlighting the importance of social participation. Methodologically, this is a theoretical study that employs a hypothetico-deductive approach, using bibliographic and documentary research methods, with indirect data collection and legal interpretation from a sociological perspective. The primary research technique adopted is bibliographic analysis.

Sabrina Lehnen Stoll, Regional University of the Northwest of the State of Rio Grande do Sul

Master’s degree holder from the Stricto Sensu Graduate Program in Law – Master's in Public Law – at the Regional University Foundation of Blumenau (FURB). PhD candidate, with a full PEPEEC PDPG/CAPES scholarship and a Sandwich Doctorate in Italy, in the Stricto Sensu Graduate Program in Law – PhD in Human Rights – at the Regional University of the Northwest of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (UNIJUÍ). Lawyer (OAB/SC). Researcher in the Research Group on Human Rights, Governance, and Democracy – Mundus (CNPq/UNIJUÍ). This article is funded by the research project Right to Housing, Neoliberalism, and Vulnerability: the Violation of Human Rights and Environmental Consequences, funded by CAPES.
