CALL FOR DOSSIER: Cultural Heritage, Public Policies, and Economy

2023-11-01

Public policies for cultural heritage are essential for its preservation, promotion, and dissemination. These policies should encompass various aspects, such as the protection and conservation of cultural assets, the promotion of tourism, the valorization of cultural expressions, among others. On the other hand, the economy of cultural heritage refers to economic activities related to the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services directly linked to heritage. Aspects driven by public policies for cultural heritage, typically under the responsibility of governments, have (un)intentional consequences on economic exchanges involving cultural heritage. Cultural tourism, the production and marketing of crafts and typical products, the restoration and maintenance of historic buildings are examples of the dynamics that involve public policies and the economy in cultural heritage.

The aim of this dossier is to reflect on public policies and their connections with the economy, focusing on understanding the role of these policies and economic dynamics in the preservation, production, circulation, and consumption of cultural heritage. To this end, we seek to gather results from literature reviews, original research, and reports of experiences, all concentrated on understanding the interfaces between public policies, economy, and cultural heritage, with the latter as the primary element of analysis.
