Abstract

The study analyzes how Afro-Indigenous identities are represented in Brazilian cinema and television, focusing on the telenovela Velho Chico (Rede Globo, 2016) and the film The Fever (A Febre, 2019), highlighting the differences between mainstream productions and independent narratives. The research is based on the assumption that the media persists in negative and reductionist stereotypes in commercial works, which often reinforce colonial views and marginalize these communities, while independent productions emerge as spaces of resistance, offering more authentic and plural representations that value Afro-Indigenous cultures and histories. The study draws on theoretical contributions from authors such as Hall (2016) and Muniz Sodré (1999), among others, and adopts Bardin’s (2000) content analysis as its methodological approach. The research concludes that, although stereotypes still predominate, independent narratives represent a promising path for transforming representations and strengthening Afro-Indigenous identities in Brazilian audiovisual culture.
