Abstract

The differential diagnosis between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Hearing Impairment (HI) represents a clinical challenge in early childhood, as both conditions may present with speech delay, lack of response to being called, and difficulties in social interaction. Early intervention is essential to ensure appropriate care and promote the child’s overall development.

This review study aimed to analyze scientific evidence regarding diagnostic and therapeutic strategies that assist in differentiating between ASD and HI in children. Nine articles published between 2019 and 2025 were reviewed from the SciELO and LILACS databases, with free access and full text available.

The results showed that objective audiological tests, such as Auditory Evoked Potentials (ABR and CAEP), combined with the application of standardized behavioral instruments, such as ADOS-2, M-CHAT, and CARS, contribute to more accurate diagnoses and individualized therapeutic approaches. The literature also highlights challenges faced by public services, such as limited availability of audiological examinations and the need for continuing education to train professional teams. Early interdisciplinary assessment, based on clinical and audiological findings, is crucial for differential diagnosis and for promoting communicative development in childhood.
