Abstract

This article aims to analyze the importance of emotional intelligence in the context of Youth and Adult Education (EJA), reflecting on its impact on the teaching-learning process, school retention, and the holistic development of students, based on the Psychology of Education. Through a qualitative and bibliographic approach, the research relied on authors such as Daniel Goleman, Howard Gardner, and Paulo Freire, highlighting the relevance of socio-emotional skills—such as empathy, self-control, motivation, self-awareness, and social skills—for strengthening interpersonal relationships and students’ ability to deal with everyday challenges. EJA students, often in situations of social vulnerability, face various obstacles, such as the undervaluation of their life experiences, emotional difficulties, family responsibilities, and the double burden of work and study, which compromise their school attendance and academic performance. In this context, the development of emotional intelligence proves essential to promote a more humanized, inclusive, and transformative education, contributing to students’ resilience, the building of affective bonds in the school environment, and engagement with their studies. It is concluded that integrating socio-emotional competencies into the educational process is fundamental to expanding the possibilities of success and retention for EJA students.
