Abstract

Objective: To describe the contributions of Augmentative and Alternative Communication in a summer camp for adults with disabilities on an island in the United States, from the perspective of a healthcare professional.
Method: A descriptive and observational experience report conducted during the month of August 2024, based on observation and lived experience in a summer camp located on an island on the northeastern coast of the United States of America.
Results: It was possible to observe the method of Augmentative and Alternative Communication being used in various ways during the camp, ranging from software and applications to printed images on paper and gestures.
Conclusion: The use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication by individuals with neurological conditions proves to be effective in several aspects beyond communication skills, such as promoting inclusion, understanding, improvement of social skills, and independence.
