Abstract

In the field of national studies on selective mutism, there is a noticeable lack of research on the psychological treatment of these children, who often manage to communicate only within the family environment. Thus, the objective of this work is to develop clinical-theoretical reflections on the joint psychological care of a child with selective mutism and her mother. To this end, a report of a clinical experience is presented, through which it was possible to observe that the mother’s presence in psychological sessions proved essential—not only to promote the child’s verbal communication with people outside the family circle but, above all, so that the mother–child bond could become the focus of clinical interventions. Based on this experience report, it is expected to produce clinical-theoretical knowledge that may support Psychology professionals in treating cases of children with selective mutism.
