Abstract

Cases in which the subject is under the influence of the death drive are relatively common in contemporary clinical practice. Adequate resources for treating these situations are not always available. Freud’s development of the concepts of the death drive and sublimation opens up possibilities for the creative act, as a therapeutic resource, to transform such scenarios. The objective of this study is, based on a clinical case, to reflect on the relationship between the death drive and the creative act, as well as on the use of art in the clinical setting as a resource for mortifying situations. The method employed is the writing of the singular case. As results, it was observed that the creative act can have therapeutic effects in situations where suffering is expressed more through actions than through discourse.
