Abstract

Schopenhauer (1788–1860), a German philosopher (German idealism and metaphysics), published The World as Will and Representation (1818), in which he developed the concept of Will as an element inherent to existence. Sigmund Freud (1856–1939), an Austrian neurologist and psychoanalyst, deeply influenced by Schopenhauer, defined the concept of drives in Drives and Their Fates (1915), where he relates the life and death drives to unconscious movements. In this regard, the objective of this study was to associate Schopenhauer’s theory of the Will with the Freudian theory of Drives through a bibliographic and documentary review, supported by six articles from the Scielo and Pepsic databases, written between 2016 and 2021, and six books. The theoretical foundation is based on the works The World as Will and Representation and Drives and Their Fates. From this, it is inferred that Will is a force of nature, and the denial of this force would lead to calmness, while Drive emerges from the individual, and its denial results in symptoms. Thus, it is considered that connecting the historical foundations for the epistemological consolidation of the psychoanalytic approach allows for a better understanding of its practical application, as the presence of this topic in current literature remains scarce.
