Abstract

This article proposes a critical reflection on how cinema, as a gender technology, contributes to the construction of lesbian subjectivity and the ways in which these women are culturally represented. Lesbian sexuality in cinema is often marked by stereotypes and fetishization, especially under the masculinist gaze. To discuss this issue, two contemporary films are analyzed: Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013), by Abdellatif Kechiche, and Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), by Céline Sciamma. The former is criticized for its hypersexualized and voyeuristic approach to female intimacy, while the latter offers a more sensitive perspective centered on the female gaze. The analysis examines how these representations influence perceptions of lesbian desire and their implications for the construction of subjectivities. Cinema can both reinforce heteronormative norms and function as a space of resistance and symbolic reinsertion for lesbian identities, contributing to new forms of visibility and expression.
