Abstract

The discrepancy between the variety of services offered to autistic children and autistic adults has been observed as a form of neglect, especially in psychotherapy services. Psychotherapy is understood as an essential tool for emotion management, but it often presents as ableist, with unprepared professionals, since the autistic population has specificities that require tailored techniques and approaches. The ongoing master’s dissertation aims to identify and propose appropriate behaviors for psychotherapists working with autistic adults. To this end, Study 1, currently in progress, consists of a systematic review based on the PRISMAⓇ protocol, using the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, PsycInfo, and Scopus. Data analysis will be conducted through reading and identifying variables present in the selected studies, which will be organized in a table. Currently, the research is in the phase of full-text reading of the articles. Study 2 will consist of structuring and conducting interviews with autistic adults. These initiatives will contribute to ensuring that the autistic population is genuinely heard regarding their preferences and needs in the psychotherapeutic process. The study is expected not only to contribute to the neurodivergence literature but also to clarify gaps concerning psychotherapeutic interventions in clinical practice.
