Abstract

This experience report aims to describe the implementation of the Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) Protocol with patients at different stages of the bariatric surgery process at the Cassiano Antônio Moraes University Hospital. The proposal sought to integrate mindfulness practices into multiprofessional follow-up, aiming to contribute to the management of binge eating, anxiety, and emotional difficulties related to the surgical process. The intervention was conducted between April 2023 and September 2024, totaling 28 weekly in-person meetings, with the participation of 24 patients selected based on clinical and subjective criteria. The evaluation was carried out qualitatively, based on field notes and spontaneous reports during and after the sessions. About 70% of participants reported improvements in emotional regulation, greater body awareness, and positive changes in their relationship with food. Approximately two-thirds mentioned a sense of greater calm, improved sleep, and reduced distress associated with anxiety, impulsivity, and binge eating. The group became a space for listening and support, strengthening bonds and promoting a sense of belonging. The study was approved by the HUCAM Research Ethics Committee (CAAE No. 7.115.329).
