Abstract

Preterm birth and neonatal hospitalization may intensify the stress experienced by mothers, negatively affecting their mental health. This study aimed to analyze the risk of parental depression among mothers of preterm infants who remained hospitalized after birth. This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study involving 99 mothers of preterm infants referred to a Follow-up Program after hospital discharge. Mothers of full-term infants and infants with genetic syndromes were excluded. The Survey of Well-being of Young Children (SWYC-BR) was used to screen for the risk of parental depression. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results indicated a higher risk of parental depression during the first months of the infant’s life, followed by a progressive decline throughout the first year. These findings reinforce the importance of systematic monitoring of maternal mental health after hospital discharge, with interventions focused on family support and comprehensive care.
